“I still find it amazing that after two years struggling with TOEFL and forever 19 points poor speaking, I gained my success in this language test. Hope you can keep your teaching and influence more and more foreign kids like me! Also, I hope my feedback will give you strength to keep going!”
Jiayu Mao needed to take the TOEFL in order to apply for graduate school. She had taken the TOEFL before and had gotten 19 on TOEFL Speaking. In September 2018 she enrolled in TOEFL Speaking Group Classes with Jamie Tanzman. After 8 group sessions with Jamie, Jiayu took the TOEFL again in October and November and increased her score from 19 to 22-23!
Here is the email Jiayu wrote to her teacher Jamie.
Dear Jamie,I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you.On Oct. 27 I took TOEFL test, even though the total score was not good (just 95), I gained 22 in my speaking part! Before it, every time I took TOEFL I always got 19 for my speaking no matter how hard I prepared for speaking part, even lost my confidence. When I arrived at the USA to begin a new journey here, at first I was afraid to speak since I could not even say a complete sentence and really afraid that people cannot understand me (sometime this indeed happened). Your teaching really opened a new world for me, I felt I finally got to know what kind of style of casual cool speaking was and what was the true authentic oral language. All my past knowledge just seemed like garbage, to be honest…After failure, I did not give up and took TOEFL one more time on Nov. 30. Today I received my scores: total 106 and speaking 23 !!! A new highest score!!! At last, I got enough scores before my graduate school application deadlines!!! I felt so excited, finally, everything paid off!!!Without hesitation, I write this email to sincerely appreciate your teaching and support and share my joy with you. Recently, I realize that it is TOEFL that really prepare our foreign students for studying aboard. In my exchange life in UCSD, I observe that everyday TOEFL scenarios are happening: discussion with professors, casual talk with friends, lectures…. And thanks to you, I finally got the right way to speak out, your oral words, phrases, intonations help a lot! Now I can almost fluently express myself, ask questions during the class among those native speakers, and not fear to speak anymore! However, I know that my speaking is still far away from a native speaker, I will keep studying and practicing, just for better communication!I still find it amazing that after two years struggling with TOEFL and forever 19 points poor speaking, I gained my success in this language test. Hope you can keep your teaching and influence more and more foreign kids like me! Also, I hope my feedback will give you strength to keep going!Thank you, thank you!Best Regards,Jiayu
