We hear a lot of excuses from TOEFL students about the reasons why they are not getting their goal score on TOEFL, especially 26+ on TOEFL Speaking.

Some of those reasons include: they are not taking the test in the right state, or the right country, or even the month that students are taking the test is the reason they did not get their goal score.

Whether you take the TOEFL in America or a foreign country, it doesn´t matter. The evaluators use the same rubrics to grade your responses. The month has nothing to do with that. So, stop looking for those excuses.

Another excuse that we hear is referencing that the ETS just want to get your money. Nonsense! If you prepare well, then you can definitely get your goal score on TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking.

There are some other excuses that we hear as well. And the commonality between all these excuses is that they give power to someone outside the individual; they blame external factors.

If you ever find yourself looking for external reasons, that should be a caution sign. Stop making excuses! The reason you didn´t get your goal score on TOEFL was because of something that you didn´t do. You are the problem.

If you didn´t get your goal score on TOEFL Speaking, it´s probably because your fluency wasn´t good enough, or because you had a strong accent, or because you didn´t speak fast enough, or because of the words and phrases you used were not correct.

And the only way you can fix that is by taking responsibility and accepting that it´s your problem. As long as you live in denial, you will never reach your goal score on the TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking. You have to take responsibility.

The first thing you need to do is accept that you are the problem. Accept that you are not doing something to get good enough, that your English is not good enough, that your accent is not good enough, that your fluency is not good enough.

Second, you need to start doing things to improve those things. It won´t be easy, it´s going to be challenging, but you need to start taking steps in the right direction to improve your speaking skills.

Third, if you can´t do it by yourself, you need to get the help of a professional. Some students try to study by themselves for too long, waste hundreds or thousands of dollars on TOEFL test fees, and months if not years of their time wasted because they refuse to get help. Stop it! If you need to get help, get help!

Today’s video might upset a few of you. It´s little controversial what I am going to speak about. And I think that´s why it´s even more important that you listen and pay attention so you can make sure you can get your goal score on TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking.

Because today´s video is about why you are the problem and why you are preventing yourself from getting your goal score on TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking, especially 26+.

And I wanted to create this video because I kept hearing excuses from students about why they can´t they get their score. And I noticed a trend amongst these students.

So, today I wanna talk about why you are the problem, what you need to do to make sure that you get yourself out of the way so you can achieve your goal score on TOEFL Speaking.

A lot of funny excuses and reasons that I hear from TOEFL students about why they are not getting their goal score on TOEFL especially 26+ on TOEFL Speaking. Some of those reasons include: they are not taking it in the right state. I´ve heard from some students that are literally driving 8 hours on the way to take the TOEFL test in another state because they think that´s going to improve their score.

Guys,  whatever state you take it, whether it´s California,  or Michigan, or New York, or Taxes, it doesn´t matter. It´s all graded by the same evaluator. The same with the country, whether you take it in America or whether you take it in a foreign country, you are getting graded on the same thing.  It doesn´t matter. That´s one excuse I often hear.

Another weird excuse that I often hear is about the month that students are taking it. The month has nothing to do with that, whether you are taking in January, June, August, April, October, you´re still going to get the same score. So, stop looking for those excuses.

Another excuse that I hear, is referencing and calling, you know, the ETS or the people who do the TOEFL test some sort of mafia, you know, how they just want to get your money and they just want to take as much as they can from you whether actually giving you a goal score.

Again, that is not true. I have met students who have done the TOEFL after 1 attempt or 2 attempts, and that´s because they´ve done what they need to prepare for the test, and get better,

ETS is not a racket; they are not a mafia, if you prepare correctly and you prepare well, then you can definitely get your goal score on TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking.

There are a number of other excuses that I hear as well. And the commonality between all these excuses is they give power to someone outside the individual; they blame someone on the outside. And what this means, is the individual like yourself, who is studying for TOEFL nad TOEFL Speaking is giving the power to an external force, which means that they are not as in control of their own destiny.

And this is really important because when you start blaming things externally and start saying, ´Oh, that´s the reason why I did not get the score, that´s the reason why didn´t get the score.´

Then it becomes much easier for you to not to take responsibility and for that reason it becomes much harder for you to actually improve the skills that you need to deal with, the skills that you need to focus on, to get your goal score on TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking.

If you ever find yourself saying, ´The reasons I didn´t get 26 on TOEFL Speaking is because of this teacher, it´s because I studied this resource, it´s because I didn´t take it in the right state, it´s because of … blah… blah …blah… blah…´

If you are looking to blame external things, that should be a caution sign. Like one student, for example, who signed up for group or private lessons last March, and he had already taken the TOEFL about 20 times, and he wasn´t getting his goal score for the same reasons.

And I told him that reasons. I told him, ´Look, the reason you are not getting your goals score is because of these reasons,´ because of his accent, and we took 2 classes and started to work on accent, and I´ve never heard from him again. It was back in March about 9 months ago.

About a month ago, he wrote me an e-mail, basically saying, ´Hey, the reason I stopped taking the lessons was because you told me the wrong reason why I wasn´t getting the score.´ And I kinda laughed and said, ´Okay.´

This is common with students; I told my student the right reason. The issue with him is he didn´t want to accept reality, because facing reality was more difficult than continuing to live within the face reality that he created for himself, around TOEFL. He kept wanting to lie to himself, so you didn´t actually have to face the truth which is most difficult.

When I hear students saying, ´The reason I didn’t get the right score is for this reason, external, external.´ No! The reason you didn´t get your goal score on TOEFL was because of something that you didn´t do. You are the problem.

If you didn´t get your goal score on TOEFL Speaking, for example, 26+, it´s probably because your fluency wasn´t good enough, or because you had a too strong accent, or because you didn´t speak fast enough, or because of the words and phrases you used were not correct.

The reason you didn´t get your goal score on TOEFL or TOEFL speaking is because something you did. And the only way you can fix that is by taking responsibility and saying, ´Ok, I accept that it´s my problem, I accept that I need to do something about it, and then going out and doing something about it.´

But as long as you live in denial, you will never reach your goal score on the TOEFL and TOEFL Speaking. You have to take responsibility.

What do you do now? If you found yourself doing this, blaming these external reasons, blaming these external factors, and you still stuck at your goal score, what can you do? The first thing you need to do is accept that you are the problem. Accept that you are not doing something to get good enough, that your English, your English Speaking is not good enough, that your accent is not good enough, that your fluency is not good enough, and you first need to accept that.

Second, you need to start doing things to improve those things. It won´t be easy, it´s going to be challenging, but you need to start taking steps in the right direction to improve your fluency, to improve the words and phrases you use, to improve your accent, you need to start taking the right steps.

Third, if you can´t do it by yourself, you need to get the help of the professional. There are teachers and students, sorry, there are teachers, myself included, who have worked with dozens if not hundreds of students to help them with theses exact problems. If you can´t do it by yourself, get the help of a professional.

I see too many students, who try to study by themselves, for too long, who waste hundreds if not thousands of dollars on TOEFL test fees, and months if not years of their time wasted because they refuse to get help. If you need to get help, get help!
